To say I’m underwhelmed is a bit of an understatement. A Court of Frost and Starlight was one of my most anticipated books of the year, and although I’d heard negative reviews I was more than willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. However, there’s nothing I can say about this book other than it was pointless.
I’m upset that Maas marketed this installment as a necessary gap between her upcoming series when this book was just an obvious money grab that spans the inner circle selecting gifts for one another. There was no plot or hint of relevance that indicated this book was necessary in terms of context for her next installments. The only mildly interesting thing that occurred was the sample for her next novel, but again, that wasn’t part of the novella. Somehow, Maas managed to reduce once three dimensional characters into caricatures of what they once were. Where Rhys was once mysterious and appealing he became perverted and creepy when given his own perspective.
Honestly, I was left so dissatisfied and disappointed with this novella and the way it was depicted/marketed that I’m having serious thoughts about whether I wish to read any of Maas’ future novels. It’s frustrating and disconcerting that there were people (including myself) who paid full price for such a poorly written and irrelevant book.
