What a brilliant surprise.
I had heard so much hype surrounding this book that I simultaneously expected to either hate it or love it. Originally, I didn’t plan on reading this book, at least not quite yet, but when my hold on my library app came through I knew I had to start it soon.
In the beginning, I told myself I would only read at most 100 pages. I had just started a book the day before, and wasn’t interested in being immersed in two different worlds. However, this book, like Evelyn Hugo, is completely and utterly mesmerizing. These are some of the most fleshed out characters I have ever had the pleasure to meet. I found myself unable to stop reading and constantly hating myself for not flipping the page sooner than I could. As a result, I devoured this book in what was basically one sitting.
There were so many things that I loved, but I truly believe this is one of those books where it’s best to go in blind. I will say that I loved the representation. It’s so rare to encounter latina main characters that when I do I’m overjoyed.
Also, I wanted to say that if you’re going to read this book I HIGHLY recommend the audiobook. Truly one of the best audiobooks I’ve ever encountered (on par with The Diviners by Libba Bray) as it truly does read like a movie. I think either way, whatever you think you’ll get out of this book, you’ll find yourself surprised. I’m not an emotional reader, yet the last section of this book made my eyes painfully sting until at last one teardrop rolled down my cheek, which for me is saying a lot. This will definitely be one of my all time favorites.
I had been wondering about this one as well. I’ll give it a shot. Thank you for sharing this.
